Sir William Withey Gull, 1st Baronet (31 December 1816 – 29 January 1890) was an English physician. Of modest family origins, he established a lucrative private practice and served as Governor of Guy's Hospital , Fullerian Professor of Physiology and President of the Clinical Society.

8 de ago. de 2016 · William Withey Gull was born on 31st December 1816 in Colchester, Essex [2, 3]. He was a son of John Gull and Elizabeth Gull. His father owned a barge named The Dove, on which William was born. In 1837 William Gull took his first job at Guy’s Hospital in London, where he also studied medical science.

Sir William Withey Gull, 1st Baronet (born Dec. 31, 1816, Colchester, Essex, Eng.—died Jan. 29, 1890, London) was a leading English physician of his time, lecturer and physician at Guy’s Hospital, London, and an outstanding clinical teacher.

7 de may. de 2017 · William Withey Gull studied paraplegia, anorexia, and hormones as a physician in England during the nineteenth century. In addition to caring for patients, he described the role of the posterior column of the spinal cord in paraplegia, and he was among the first to describe the conditions of anorexia and of hypochondria.
William Withey Gull. William Gull, a man of humble origins, became one of the outstanding, polymath physicians of the 19th century, and physician to Queen Victoria. Among several important and original contributions, this paper summarises his work on myxoedema, paraplegia and anorexia nervosa.

Three years later he received his Bachelor of Medicine degree. In 1846 he became a physician and received a gold medal for his academic results. He lectured on physiology and comparative anatomy at Guy’s Hospital.
