John Laurens (October 28, 1754 – August 27, 1782) was an American soldier and statesman from South Carolina during the American Revolutionary War, best known for his criticism of slavery and his efforts to help recruit slaves to fight for their freedom as U.S. soldiers.

Well educated, well connected and fluent in French, he’d been appointed to Washington’s staff as an aide-de-camp.
A reluctant student of the law, John Laurens was more interested in the growing political tensions between the American colonies and England. Laurens left England by 1777 and headed for America via France.
