  6. On the death of his brother in 1632, Manners succeeded, as 7th earl of Rutland, to an estate encumbered with debts of £9,500 and the claims of his niece, the duchess of Buckingham, to much of her father’s property.

  7. Manners himself died 23 Apr. 1623 and was buried in the same church, at Bakewell. An inventory of goods at his home at Haddon, taken on his death, showed a total value of £1,270 3s.4d.
