Field Marshal Thomas Grosvenor (30 May 1764 – 20 January 1851) was a British Army officer. After serving as a junior officer defending the Bank of England during the Gordon Riots he took part in the Flanders Campaign including the retreat into Germany during the French Revolutionary Wars.
The sketch was commissioned by Anne Flore Millet, Marquise de Bréhan (1749–1826), a French aristocrat and portraitist who particularly admired the detail of Lieutenant Grosvenor (1744–1825) and his servant from the original composition.

These estates were acquired in 1677 through the marriage of Sir Thomas Grosvenor with Mary Davies, the infant daughter and heiress of a scrivener in the City of London.
