    Duntreath was granted to a branch of the Lothian-based Edmonstone family as long ago as 1425 after the forfeiture of the estate by the Earl of Lennox. It was granted by James I to William Edmonstone of Culloden who had married Lady Mary Stewart, daughter of Robert III.
