James Hamilton, 3rd Earl of Arran (1537–1609) was a Scottish nobleman and soldier who opposed the French-dominated regency during the Scottish Reformation. He was the eldest son of James Hamilton, Duke of Châtellerault, sometime regent of Scotland.
James Hamilton, 3rd earl of Arran (1537?−1609) was twice considered as a husband to royalty: to Mary Stuart, the queen of Scotland, and to Elizabeth I, the queen of England. He was confined for insanity after 1562.
James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Châtellerault, 2nd Earl of Arran (c. 1519 – 22 January 1575), was a Scottish nobleman and head of the House of Hamilton. A great-grandson of King James II of Scotland , he was heir presumptive to the Scottish throne (1536–1540, 1541–1542, 1542–1566 and 1567–1575).

James Hamilton, then Earl of Arran, was ennobled for services to Charles I. An influential military leader during the Thirty Years’ War, he returned as Charles’ principal Scottish adviser when the conflict ended. But life was not always kind to the first Duke of Hamilton.

About Sir James Hamilton, 3rd Earl of Arran, 1st marquis of Hamilton He was the son of James Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Arran and Lady Margaret Douglas. On 14 August 1546 he was deprived by Act of Parliament of rights of succession unitl he was free of his kipnapers, the murderers of Cardinal Betoun.
