Charles Robert Grey, 5th Earl Grey DL (15 December 1879 – 2 April 1963), styled Viscount Howick between 1894 and 1917, was an English nobleman, the son of Albert Grey, 4th Earl Grey. Grey was born in London in 1879 and was the son of the 4th Earl of Grey.

Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey (c. 1764–1845) was the son of Charles Grey, 1st Earl Grey and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Lord Grey's government enacted the abolition of slavery in the British Empire by initiating the mass purchase of slaves from their owners in 1833.
His son, Charles, 5th Earl Grey, was a major in the Army. He died without male issue and was succeeded by his second cousin once removed, Richard, 6th Earl Grey . He was the great-great-grandson of Admiral the Hon. George Grey, fourth son of the second earl.
Howick has been owned by the Grey family since 1319. Lady Mary Grey, the elder daughter of Charles 5th Earl Grey, was the last member of the family to be called Grey. She inherited the Estate from her father in 1963 and died aged 94 in 2001.

The Earl of Grey was created in 1806 for General Charles Grey, 1st Baron Grey (1729–1807). He had already been created Baron Grey , of Howick in the County of Northumberland, in 1801, and was made Viscount Howick , in the County of Northumberland, at the same time as he was given the earldom.
