Sherman was the son of Richard Updike Sherman, a newspaper editor and Democratic Party politician, and Mary Frances Sherman.

His father owned a canning factory and was active in Democratic politics. Sherman attended Hamilton College and graduated in 1878 after distinguishing himself in oratory and debate.
