François I de Clèves, (2 September 1516 – 13 February 1561) was a French Prince étranger and military commander during the Italian Wars. He was the first duke of Nevers, his county being elevated to a duchy in 1539.
In 1539 the county of Nevers was raised to a duchy. [1] François I (1539–1561) (His mother, Marie of Albret (d. 1549), widow of Charles II, also took the title in 1539, even though it was her son and his wife who became the actual duke and duchess.)

Louis de Gonzague, Duke of Nevers (Italian: Ludovico or Luigi di Gonzaga-Nevers; 18 September 1539 – 23 October 1595) was a soldier, governor and statesman during the French Wars of Religion. His father and brother were reigning dukes of Mantua.
The French king Francis I erected it into a duchy for Francis of Cleves in 1539. In 1565 Louis de Gonzaga (d. 1595), son of a duke of Mantua, married Henrietta of Cleves, duchesse de Nevers, and one of his descendants, Charles (d. 1665), sold the Nivernais to Cardinal Mazarin in 1659.
