Alexis nació en Burgsteinfurt, Reino de Prusia, el 17 de noviembre de 1845 y era el cuarto vástago y el primer hijo varón del príncipe Luis Guillermo de Bentheim y Steinfurt (1812-1890) y su esposa, la landgravina Bertha de Hesse-Philippsthal-Barchfeld (1818-1888).
