Gruffudd ap Cynan (c. 1055 –1137), sometimes written as Gruffydd ap Cynan, was King of Gwynedd from 1081 until his death in 1137. In the course of a long and eventful life, he became a key figure in Welsh resistance to Norman rule.

GRUFFUDD ap CYNAN (c. 1055 - 1137), king of Gwynedd. Son of Cynan ap Iago, who was an exile in Ireland, and Rhagnell (Ragnhildr), a daughter of the royal house of the Scandinavians of Dublin. After 1039, when Iago was treacherously slain by his own men, Gwynedd was ruled by usurpers who were not of the royal line.
Gruffudd ap Cynan ab Owain Gwynedd was the grandson of Owain Gwynedd, a famous king of Gwynedd and ruler of most of Wales in the 12th century. The longer patronymic form of his name is usually used to distinguish him from the earlier and better-known Gruffudd ap Cynan, king of Gwynedd.
Gruffudd is the only medieval Welsh prince whose biographical eulogy has survived. In its earliest extant form, it appears to be a late 12th century translation of a lost Latin original. Records of King Gruffudd date back to the 11th century.
