John Michael Kosterlitz (born June 22, 1943) is a Scottish-American physicist. He is a professor of physics at Brown University and the son of biochemist Hans Kosterlitz. He was awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize in physics along with David Thouless and Duncan Haldane for work on condensed matter physics.
Professor Kosterlitz does research in condensed matter theory, one- and two-dimensional physics; in phase transitions: random systems, electron localization, and spin glasses; and in critical dynamics: melting and freezing.
Biographical. Childhood. I was born on June 22, 1943 in wartime Aberdeen, Scotland and lived there for the first sixteen years of my life.

4 de oct. de 2016 · Kosterlitz becomes the second Nobel laureate currently on the Brown physics faculty. He joins Leon Cooper, who won the prize in 1972 for developing a theory of superconductivity, the ability of some materials to conduct electricity with zero resistance.
