Baker studied local plants and produced a supplement (1854) to the Yorkshire flora by Henry Baines. Baker was later employed as an assistant at K (1866-1890), later becoming Keeper (1890-1899). He specialised in Pteridophytes, Amaryllidaceae, Bromeliaceae and Iridaceae.
