  5. 2 de ago. de 2017 · Hassler Whitney proved the first general embedding theorem in 1936. He showed, among other things, that any differentiable manifold could be properly embedded in a higher-dimensional Euclidean space. His fundamental tools included Lebesgue measure theory and the notion of a cut-off function.

  6. Whitney is probably best known for introducing the grandfather of today's innumerable embedding theorems--his strong embedding theorem stating that any smooth manifold can be smoothly embedded in a Euclidean space of twice the manifold's dimension.

  7. Hassler Whitney [was] a mathematician who made important contributions in geometry and . . . was deeply involved in improving the teaching of mathematics. . . . Whitney's specialty was geometry, particularly topology, including the study of multidimensional surfaces like spheres.
