Raja Rao nace en Hassan (Karnataka) en 1908. Es el mayor de nueve hermanos de una distinguida familia de brahmanes, que «podía presumir de haber sido vedantin desde el siglo XIII». Con cuatro años pierde a su madre y la orfandad se convertirá en un tema recurrente en su obra.
