In fact, most of the towns and villages that make up the borough today are of Saxon origin and still have their Anglo-Saxon names. In the 10th century, Surrey was divided into regional units known as Hundreds. Elmbridge was named after the Saxon word for the River Mole, 'Emlyn'.
The history of Elmbridge Borough stretches back over a thousand years. Far from being â inventedâ in 1974 with local government reorganisation, the story begins in smoke-filled Saxon times during the sixth or seventh century A.D.
