The House of Guise was founded as a cadet branch of the House of Lorraine by Claude of Lorraine (1496–1550), who entered French service and was made the first Duke of Guise by King Francis I in 1527.
In 1520, the Parlement of Paris awarded the countship of Guise to Claude of Lorraine, second son of René II of Lorraine (the grandson of René I of Naples) and heir to his French possessions. The countship was elevated to a dukedom in 1528.
Claude de Lorraine, 1st duke de Guise (born Oct. 20, 1496, Condé-sur-Moselle, Fr.—died April 12, 1550, Joinville) was the count and later (from 1527) duke of Guise, the first of the great members of the House of Guise.
Claude de Lorraine (1496–1550) was created the 1st duke de Guise in 1527 for his service to Francis I in the defense of France. Claude’s sons François, 2nd duke de Guise, and Charles, cardinal de Lorraine (1524–1574), gained great power during the reign of Francis II.

By Susan Abernethy. In reading about the mother of Mary, Queen of Scots, Marie of Guise, I came across a touching story about Marie of Guise’s father, Claude, Duke of Guise. Claude was a cousin of King Francis I of France’s mother, Louise of Savoy. Duke Claude and King Francis were very close friends.
