Coxwold is a compact village; there are fewer than 300 inhabitants and about 100 dwellings of different kinds. Many of the houses still retain their garths – long strips of land behind each house. A very large field, common land until the 1960s, is still called the Town’s Pasture, and was jointly grazed until 1965.
Newburgh Priory is a Grade 1 listed Tudor building near Coxwold, North Yorkshire, England. Originally a house of Augustinian canons, it was founded in 1145 and became a family home following the dissolution of the priory in 1538.
Once one of the greatest monasteries in England, Byland Abbey inspired the design of church buildings throughout the North. A truly outstanding example of early gothic architecture, it inspired the design of the famous York Minster rose window.
