The College was founded in 1584 by Sir Walter Mildmay, who was Chancellor of the Exchequer to Elizabeth I.
History of the College. Emmanuel College was founded by Sir Walter Mildmay, chancellor of the exchequer to Queen Elizabeth I, on the site of a thirteenth-century Dominican Priory. Emmanuel House, the Hostel, the Squash Court and East Court. The Hostel was designed by William Fawcett, was built in 1886–88. It was constructed to provide affordable accommodation, and was doubled in size in 1894. The architect for the Victorian extension, and for Emmanuel House, was John Loughborough Pearson.
