He was the son of Friedrich I, Duke of Anhalt and Princess Antoinette of Saxe-Altenburg, and had five siblings: Leopold, Hereditary Prince of Anhalt (1855-1886) – married Princess Elisabeth of Hesse-Kassel, had one daughter.
