Biografía. Era el hijo mayor del duque de Brunswick Alberto el Alto y de su segunda esposa Adelaida, hija del Margrave Bonifacio II de Montferrato. Su padre había gobernado el Ducado de Brunswick-Luneburgo conjuntamente con su hermano Juan, hasta que ambos se dividieron su territorio en 1269.
