Llanthony is located in the Vale of Ewyas, a deep and long valley with glacial origins within the Black Mountains, Wales, seven miles north of Abergavenny and within the eastern section of the Brecon Beacons National Park.
Llanthony Secunda Priory is a 12th Century medieval Priory. A hidden Gem nestled between the village of Hempsted and Gloucester’s historic docks. Within our grounds you can discover medieval ruins and some of the earliest medieval and Tudor brickwork in the county.
Llanthony Secunda Priory is the remains of a once large and important Augustinian Priory which was founded in 1136 after canons fled from Llanthony Priory in Monmouthshire, Wales.
The remains of the 12th-century Llanthony Secunda Priory are located next to Gloucestershire College campus along the canal, south of the Docks. They comprise the ruins of a stone tithe barn and two restored ranges around an inner court, plus sections of the precinct wall and the ruins of the western gatehouse into the priory estate.
In the late 12 th and early 13 th centuries Llanthony Priory, in this tranquil and remote valley, would truly have been a spectacular site to behold, and the Priory Church itself was one of the greatest buildings of medieval Wales. The site is now in the guardianship of Cadw.
