About. Newnham is one of the 31 colleges of the University of Cambridge: a place of learning, teaching and research. Our college was established in 1871, as a women’s college at a time when women were not allowed to attend the University. Our co-founders included Dame Millicent Garrett Fawcett, the famous campaigner for women’s suffrage.
History of Newnham – Newnham College. Gill Sutherland’s history of the College, from its foundation in 1871 until the present day, also contains photos from our archives. Newnham began as a house for five students in Regent Street in Cambridge in 1871. Lectures for Ladies had been started in Cambridge in 1870.
History. Newnham was established in 1871 as a house in which young women could reside while attending lectures in Cambridge, long before they were allowed to become full members of the university with the granting of degrees to women in 1948.
