El portugués ( português ⓘ) es una lengua romance flexiva, perteneciente a la familia de lenguas indoeuropeas y procedente del galaicoportugués. Tras la independencia de Portugal del Reino de Galicia y del Reino de León en 1139 y la posterior Reconquista hacia el sur, el galaicoportugués se fue expandiendo por los límites del actual Portugal.
Aunque la población de la península ibérica se haya establecido mucho antes de la colonización romana, pocos rastros de las lenguas nativas persistieron en el portugués moderno.
