The Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery is a rural cemetery located in Poughkeepsie, New York and includes the gravesites of several notable figures. It also has a crematory. The forty-four acres of land used for the cemetery were purchased by Matthew Vassar. Some of its architectural features were designed by J. A. Wood.
The Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery is located on the east bank of the majestic Hudson River in the Town of Poughkeepsie, New York. The Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery is one hundred sixty-five acres of gently rolling hills, tranquil waters and stately trees creating a park-like sanctuary of abiding dignity and natural splendor.
In the middle decades of the nineteenth century, a revolution took place in the manner in which Americans viewed death and burial. “Rural Cemeteries” replaced church yards and family plots as the burial place of choice, and the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery was part of this revolution.

We thought it would be nice to share some of the details of its early history and inform you of a very special installation at the cemetery: a Día de los Muertos ofrenda (altar), on display until November 15th.
The Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery displays architecture from the 19th Century, beautiful landscape design and historic monumentation. Many individuals who influenced the shaping of local and national events are memorialized in this sacred place.
Now encompassing 165 acres of topographically varied land between the eastern bank of the Hudson River and Route 9, this Picturesque rural cemetery was established in 1852 by a committee, including local brewer Matthew Vassar, to alleviate crowding in local church burial grounds.
