Prince Philippe of Belgium, Count of Flanders ( Dutch: Filips; 24 March 1837 – 17 November 1905), was the third born and second surviving son of King Leopold I of Belgium and Louise d'Orléans. He was the brother of Leopold II of Belgium and Empress Carlota of Mexico .
The count of Flanders was the ruler or sub-ruler of the county of Flanders, beginning in the 9th century. [1] Later, the title would be held for a time, by the rulers of the Holy Roman Empire and Spain.

The palace owes its current name to Prince Philippe, Count of Flanders, third son of King Leopold I and brother of King Leopold II, who bought the residence in 1866, and moved there in May 1868, after his marriage to Princess Marie of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen .
