Readers on the West Coast may already be aware of this, but Stanford University has one of the oddest mascot’s in collegiate sports: a tree. Called — appropriately — the Stanford Tree, it is the official mascot of the band and the unofficial mascot of the university.

It often makes lists of the most bizarre mascots. Nevertheless, the university has never officially acknowledged the mascot despite its deep ties to student life.
