This scenic park south of downtown Chicago is the burial place of distinguished statesman Stephen Arnold Douglas (1813-1861). The Douglas Monument Association was organized in 1861 to build a suitable memorial at the gravesite. In 1864 the Association adopted the design of Illinois sculptor Leonard W. Volk.

6 de dic. de 2021 · Stephen A. Douglas died June 7, 1861, and was buried near his Chicago cottage. Friends soon organized the Douglas Monument Association to construct a suitable tomb near the site. Work on the monument, designed by Leonard W. Volk, began in 1866, and two years later Douglas's remains were transferred from their temporary grave.
U. S. Sen. Stephen A. Douglas, who died in 1861 at the age of 48, played an important role in the development of Chicago. He was an early investor in Chicago real estate, and his tomb stands on land that was once part of his 53-acre estate, "Oakenwald."
