EVANSTON, Ill. --- Sometimes fearless, sometimes wacky, but always full of purple pride, mascot Willie the Wildcat is one of Northwestern University’s most visible public symbols.
Mascot. The Northwestern Athletics' mascot is Willie the Wildcat. However, the team's first mascot was a live, caged bear cub from the Lincoln Park Zoo named Furpaw. In fall 1923, Furpaw was driven to the playing field to greet the fans before each game.
1960: Decades after his appearance on the sidelines, Willie the Wildcat rode in a Homecoming parade. Northwestern athletes were first called "wildcats" after a 1924 game against the University of Chicago.
