And so football came to Northwestern on Tuesday, February 22, 1876. NU hosted the game in Evanston. The game was a relatively big event, and reporters from several Chicago papers as well as NU's student paper were on hand to cover the game.
The 1876 college football season had no clear-cut champion, with the Official NCAA Division I Football Records Book listing Yale as having been selected national champions.
