Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves. The Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves was based on the enactment Reichsgesetzblatt I S. 849 of 3 June 1940. The last officially announced number for the Oak Leaves was 843. Higher numbers are unofficial and therefore denoted in brackets.
The Knight’s Cross with Golden Oakleaves, Swords and Diamonds was the highest single grade of the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross and was awarded only once during WWII – an exception to the rule for this award which was only to be awarded 12 times once WWII ended.
The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords was awarded to 46 of the 328 Oak Leaves recipients of 1944. Out of these 46 presentations, Veit Scherzer disputed eight of them for reasons associated to the deteriorating situation of Germany during the final days of World War II.
The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves was introduced on June 3rd, 1940 to further recognize acts of courage. As with the preceding medals, the Oak Leaves could only be awarded to one who had earlier received the Knight's Cross. A fan of three silver oak leaves decorated the Knight's Cross, just above the clip on the medallion.
