Pope Gregory XV (Latin: Gregorius XV; Italian: Gregorio XV; 9 January 1554 – 8 July 1623), born Alessandro Ludovisi, was the head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 9 February 1621 until his death in 1623.

Pope Gregory XV, born Alessandro Ludovisi in 1554 and was the leader of the Catholic Church from 1621 to 1623. He was the 234th pope. Most know him for the bulls he issued, including one that allowed bishops to vote for popes by secret ballot. He also released an order that spoke out against witches and magicians.
Gregory XV was the pope from 1621 to 1623. Of noble birth, he was educated at the University of Bologna, where he earned a doctorate in law. He was appointed archbishop of Bologna in 1612 and cardinal in 1616 by Pope Paul V. He succeeded Paul as pope on Feb. 9, 1621.

Pope Gregory V ( Latin: Gregorius V; c. 972 – 18 February 999), born Bruno of Carinthia, was the bishop of Rome and ruler of the Papal States from 3 May 996 to his death. A member of the Salian dynasty, he was made pope by his cousin, Emperor Otto III .
