He became internationally recognised for creating the lead role of Swan/Stranger in Matthew Bourne's contemporary dance production of the ballet Swan Lake, a role that was briefly featured in the 2000 film Billy Elliot, in which Cooper played the adult version of the titular character.

Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake is a contemporary ballet based on the Russian romantic work Swan Lake, from which it takes the music by Tchaikovsky and the broad outline of the plot. Bourne 's rendering is best known for having the traditionally female parts of the swans danced by men.
He also made his debut as the Prince in Swan Lake with Bussell in Austin, Texas, on tour with the Royal Ballet in 1991. His first performances partnering Sylvie Guillem were in 1991, firstly in Balanchine's Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux and then in Balanchine's Symphony in C 2nd movement. Adam also partnered Viviana Durante in this ballet's 1st movement.
