History. In 1920, heavyweight boxing champion Jack Johnson rented the upper floor of the building on the corner of 142nd Street and Lenox Avenue in the heart of Harlem and opened an intimate supper club called the Club Deluxe.
About the Cotton Club. Within a few years after Prohibition was enacted, a number of prosperous clubs had opened in Harlem. All followed the same basic formulae: present exotic late night entertainment and, more importantly, sell a lot of bootleg liquor.
Cotton Club, legendary nightspot in the Harlem district of New York City that for years featured prominent Black entertainers who performed for white audiences. The club formed the springboard to fame for Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong, Ethel Waters, Lena Horne, and many others.
