Hace 3 días · Volcanoes occur when material significantly warmer than its surroundings is erupted onto the surface of a planet or moon from its interior. On Earth, the erupted material can be liquid rock ("lava" when it's on the surface, "magma" when it's underground), ash, cinders, and/or gas.
Volcanoes prove that beneath its calm surface, Earth remains a living planet. Volcanoes, like Mauna Loa in Hawaii, are effusive. Rather than a violent explosion, lava pours or flows out.

A volcano is an opening in Earth ’s crust. When a volcano erupts, hot gases and melted rock from deep within Earth find their way up to the surface. This material may flow slowly out of a fissure, or crack, in the ground, or it may explode suddenly into the air. Volcanic eruptions may be very destructive.

When magma reaches the Earth’s surface, it is called lava. Lava can be as hot as 2,200°F (1,204°C). Some volcanic eruptions are explosive. Lava shoots into the sky. Gas and hot pieces of rock and ash are also released.
