Royal Holloway is a university formed from two colleges, Bedford College and Royal Holloway College, founded by social pioneers in the 19th century. They were among the first places in Britain where women could access higher education and are now part of the University of London.
In 1985, Bedford College merged with Royal Holloway College, another constituent of the University of London, to form Royal Holloway and Bedford New College. This remains the official name, but it is commonly called Royal Holloway, University of London (RHUL).
