Un grupo de migrantes abandona Londres a bordo de un barco de vapor para comenzar una nueva vida en Nueva York. Todo parece ir sobre ruedas hasta que se encuentran otro barco similar a la deriva en alta mar, siendo entonces cuando el viaje pasa a convertirse en una pesadilla.

Las grabaciones de '1899' comenzaron el 3 de mayo de 2021, tres meses más tarde de lo inicialmente previsto. El rodaje transcurrió en su mayor parte en Alemania -estuvieron allí hasta bien avanzado el mes de octubre-, pero el equipo también visitó Londres durante un par de semanas.
