William Morris Hughes CH QC (25 September 1862 – 28 October 1952) was an Australian politician who served as the seventh prime minister of Australia from 1915 to 1923. He led the country during World War I, and his influence on national politics spanned several decades.
Hughes was a member of federal parliament from the beginning of Federation in 1901 until 1952. Prior to that he spent seven years in the NSW Parliament. He was Prime Minister for seven-and-a-quarter years. While Prime Minister during the First World War, he became known as the ‘Little Digger’ and was an advocate for compulsory military service.
