From the introduction of the telephone in the late 1870s, to the early 1990s, telephone numbers in most of the United Kingdom were usually shown with a written exchange name followed by the subscriber number, e.g. 'Mallaig 10' or 'Aberdeen 43342'.

London's first trunk telephone line was opened with Brighton on 17th December. The first upright multiple telephone switchboard in England was installed by Western Electric in Liverpool. 19 de jul. de 2023 · The 0207 and 0208 codes were introduced in 2005, followed by the 02080 code in 2010. These new codes provided further expansion of the number pool and allowed for the allocation of more phone numbers in the London area.
The first four digits of the local number identifies a small area within the town or city. At the time of the change, the subscriber part of the number gained an extra digit in London, those in Northern Ireland gained two or three digits, and the subscriber part of the number in the other areas gained two digits.
