Show Boat is a musical with music by Jerome Kern and book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. It is based on Edna Ferber 's best-selling 1926 novel of the same name . The musical follows the lives of the performers, stagehands and dock workers on the Cotton Blossom , a Mississippi River show boat , over 40 years from 1887 to 1927.

The first show of its kind, Show Boat presented complex characters grappling with timely, realistic themes woven into a substantial plot.
For the 1936 film version of Show Boat, Kern and Hammerstein wrote three new songs, including "I Have The Room Above Her" and "Ah Still Suits Me". High, Wide, and Handsome (1937) was intentionally similar in plot and style to Show Boat , but it was a box-office failure.
