Lorraine, historical region of France, incorporated since January 2016 into the administrative region of Grand Est. Created by the Treaty of Verdun as part of Lotharingia in 843, Lorraine was contested by Germany and Burgundy during the Middle Ages and fell under French control in the 17th century.
Lorraine [Note 1] is a cultural and historical region in Northeastern France, now located in the administrative region of Grand Est. Its name stems from the medieval kingdom of Lotharingia (855–959 AD), which in turn was named after either Emperor Lothair I or King Lothair II.
