On 1 August, the Luftwaffe was directed to achieve air superiority over the RAF, with the aim of incapacitating RAF Fighter Command; 12 days later, it shifted the attacks to RAF airfields and infrastructure.

La Luftwaffe contaba con más de 1000 bombarderos y unos 700 cazas para la operación y se calcula que realizaron 2119 acciones aquel día. Tras este primer día de operaciones, cuarenta aviones alemanes fueron derribados, pero las consecuencias del bombardeo fueron devastadoras para la RAF.
