13 de may. de 2024 · History. Munich, Germany. Munich, or München (“Home of the Monks”), traces its origins to the Benedictine monastery at Tegernsee, which was probably founded in 750 ce. In 1157 Henry the Lion, duke of Bavaria, granted the monks the right to establish a market where the road from Salzburg met the Isar River.

By that time the Guelph Henry the Lion, Duke of Saxony and Bavaria, built a bridge over the river Isar next to a settlement of Benedictine monks .

From only 24,000 inhabitants in 1700, the city population doubled about every 30 years. It was 100,000 in 1852, 250,000 in 1883 and 500,000 in 1901. The origins of Munich as a medieval town date back to 1158, when it was founded by Henry the Lion, Duke of Saxony and Bavaria. It officially became a city in 1175. From the Middle Ages to the 17th Century. In the early 13th century, control was given to the House of Wittelsbach. In 1255, the city became the family's official place of residence.
