History. Palo Alto is named after El Palo Alto, a historic 110 ft tall (34 m) California Redwood on the banks of the San Francisquito Creek, sighted and named by the Portolá expedition in 1769. Before the arrival of Europeans, the Ohlone lived on the San Francisco peninsula; in particular, the Puichon Ohlone lived in the Palo Alto area.
