The Coat of arms of Styria ( German: Steirisches Wappen) is the historic coat of arms of the region of Styria, a federal state of Austria. It shows a white heraldic panther (the 'Styrian Panther') with red horns and claws breathing red fire on a green field. The shield is crowned with the ducal hat of Styria.
After a short rule by the Bohemian Kings, Steiermark became part of Austria in 1282. Ever since the area of Steiermark has decreased. Parts now belong to other Austrian states, and in 1919 a large area became part of Yugoslavia (now Slovenia). The panther first appears as a symbol for Steiermark on a seal from Duke Ottokar III from around 1260.

Origin/meaning. The arms show the panther of Steiermark, as the city was already in the 12 th century the capital of Steiermark. The only difference between the arms of the city and of the state, is that the panther in the arms of the city is crowned. The panther already appeared in the 13th century seals of the city.
Steiermark, Bundesland (federal state), southeastern and central Austria, bordering Slovenia on the south and bounded by Bundesländer Kärnten (Carinthia) on the south, Salzburg on the west, Oberösterreich and Niederösterreich (Upper and Lower Austria) on the north, and Burgenland on the east.
