Sweden has continuously been a monarchy since the country's consolidation in the Viking Age and early Middle Ages, for over a thousand years. [1] The incumbent royal dynasty of Sweden is the House of Bernadotte, established on the throne in 1818.

Over the centuries, its role has changed in line with the rest of society. Our current king is Sweden's longest reigning monarch, and his motto is "For Sweden – With the Times".

The current Swedish royal family is of the House of Bernadotte, the dynasty that has ruled the longest. In 1810, King Karl XIII was left without a successor, following the death of his adopted son Prince Karl August.
The Swedish Royal House belongs to the Bernadotte dynasty, who have held the Swedish throne for over 200 years.
Alongside the mediaeval kings Magnus Ladulås and Karl Knutsson Bonde, the church is also where all Sweden's monarchs from King Gustav II Adolf to King Gustaf V – with the exception of Queen Kristina – are buried.
