A Tory (/ ˈ t ɔː r i /) is an individual who supports a political philosophy known as Toryism, based on a British version of traditionalist conservatism which upholds the established social order as it has evolved through the history of Great Britain.
The Conservative Party was founded in 1834 from the Tory Party and was one of two dominant political parties in the 19th century, along with the Liberal Party. Under Benjamin Disraeli, it played a preeminent role in politics at the height of the British Empire.
The first Tory party traces its principles and politics to the English Civil War which divided England between the Cavalier (supporters of King Charles I) or Roundhead (the supporters of the Long Parliament upon which the King had declared war).
