The 1948 Summer Olympics (officially the Games of the XIV Olympiad and also known as London 1948) were an international multi-sport event held from 29 July to 14 August 1948 in London, United Kingdom. Following a twelve-year hiatus caused by the outbreak of World War II, these were the first Summer Olympics held since the 1936 Games in Berlin.

Facts. Overview. As in 1920, the IOC decided that it was necessary to resurrect the Olympic Movement at the earliest scheduled time. Although England had been ravaged by Hitler ’s raids, the Games of the XIVth Olympiad were awarded to London in 1948.
