There is an allegation that the teenage Princess Elizabeth was sexually abused by Thomas Seymour after Henry VIII ’s death in January 1547. Seymour was the brother of one of her stepmothers, Jane Seymour, and the husband of another, Katherine Parr. So what’s the evidence and did it happen?
We see Elizabeth swing from honour to disgrace and back again as she is made illegitimate, brought back into the succession, suffers harassment and scandal at the hands of Thomas Seymour, honoured as a great lady, scrutinised as a potential traitor until – finally – she claims the throne for herself.
Ashley was increasingly concerned that Seymour arrived barelegged and in his slippers each morning as well as trying to climb into the same bed as Elizabeth. Servants talked and Elizabeth could not afford to have scandal attached to her name given the charges that had been levied against her mother.
But the scandal resulting from their flirtation will hardly be the only trial the young Elizabeth will face. As she watches warring factions struggle to claim influence over her sickly younger brother, she is repeatedly embroiled in a variety of schemes and intrigues in an attempt to secure her own place in the royal succession.
When Catherine dies in autumn 1548 and Seymour is arrested for treason soon after, the scandal explodes into the open. Alone and in dreadful danger, Elizabeth is closely questioned by the king's regency council: Was she still a virgin? Was there a child? Had she promised to marry Seymour?
