13th century German great helm with a flat top to the skull. The great helm or heaume, also called pot helm, bucket helm and barrel helm, is a helmet of the High Middle Ages which arose in the late twelfth century in the context of the Crusades and remained in use until the fourteenth century.

At first, these Helmets had a square top, but this happened to become a target for hammers. Later the designs upgraded to a conical (pointy) top, this lessened the impact of hammers and swords.

The evolution of the helm continued throughout the thirteenth century as the helm grew longer, protecting more of the head and neck. The great helm also began to regain the more rounded, and often more conical shape of its progenitors. This change in shape no doubt helped deflect blows.
